HIIT – Worldwide Survey on Global Fitness Trends

Thompson, Walter R. Ph.D., FACSM

In 2015, when this blog was only just getting underway, we posted a summary of the HIIT – Worldwide Survey on Global Fitness Trends 2015. Comparing that to the 2019 survey is interesting.

Over a 5 year period there have been significant changes in fitness trends. So it’s good to see HIIT holding its own at number 3. I also like that bodyweight training continues to do well. Bodyweight training can be a great part of your HIIT workout routine.

Looking back, in 2015 there seems to have been a lot of hype around unqualified fitness professionals and personal trainers. Being totally upfront, I am a commited amateur with no professional qualifications. Please don’t hold that against me.

The biggest ‘surprise’ for 2019 is the position of wearable fitness technologies. Everything from smartphone carrying pouches, to the massive range of watches and fitbits and clones, and on to heart rate straps.

For HIIT, wearables are brilliant. You can time your exercise while monitoring your pulse, VO2, energy expenditure, recovery time…

Everything to make your HITT truly effective.
